Ruble’s Recovery: Overcoming Hip Pain and Regaining Mobility

Ruble Pitre, a Montegut, LA native, had always been active. At 76, he enjoyed yard work around his home in Bourg, LA. But over the past few years, persistent pain in his right hip had slowed him down. Yet, seeking medical help was the last thing on his mind. His wife, Peggy, had been battling stage 4 lung cancer, and his focus was entirely on her fight.

Through months of treatments and doctor’s visits, Ruble put his own discomfort aside. Then, something incredible happened. Peggy was in remission.

Ruble finally made an appointment with an orthopedic specialist. X-rays confirmed his right hip was severely deteriorating due to osteoarthritis. Dr. H. Lawrence Haydel, II, an Orthopedic Surgeon at Gulf Coast Orthopedics in Houma, LA, explained that a total hip replacement was the best option to restore his mobility and eliminate the pain.

In February 2025, Ruble underwent a total right hip replacement at Terrebonne General Health System under the care of Dr. Haydel. The procedure went smoothly, and he was encouraged to take his first steps with assistance within hours. That same afternoon, he returned home, remarking that everything had gone exceptionally well.

Ruble credits his successful treatment and recovery process to Dr. Haydel and his dedicated physical therapy care team. “I chose Gulf Coast Orthopedics for the second hip replacement because everything went great and as planned for the first surgery,” said Ruble, who previously underwent a total left hip replacement in 2015.

During his recovery, Ruble had an incredible support system—his wife, Peggy. He credits her for providing excellent care and jokingly adds that her cooking made the experience even better. Fortunately, he was able to manage most tasks on his own, except for taking a bath.

“Listen to the doctor and therapist,” Ruble advises. “If you abide by the rules, then everything should go great.”

Now fully recovered and pain-free, Ruble is grateful for the care he received and looks forward to enjoying life with Peggy by his side, whether it’s a trip to the casino or a well-earned vacation.
